Overview

The Gymnastics Coach will be responsible for leading and supporting entry-level gymnastics classes, with a focus on developing foundational skills in young athletes. This role requires a passionate and dedicated individual who is committed to fostering the growth and development of each participant in a safe, inclusive, and encouraging environment. Key responsibilities include designing and implementing age-appropriate training plans, instructing proper techniques, and promoting both physical and mental skill development. The Gymnastics Coach will exemplify a strong commitment to participant safety, individual progress, and the overall mission and core values of the YMCA.

  • Dan McKinney Family YMCA - La Jolla
    • Monday- Friday 3pm - 7:30pm
    • Saturdays 8:00am - 12:30pm
  • Jackie Robinson Family YMCA - Southeast San Diego
    • Wednesday: 2 pm - 7 pm
    • Saturday: 8 am - 1:30 pm
  • Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA - Carlsbad
    • Flexible schedule: mornings, afternoons, and weekends
  • McGrath Family YMCA - Spring Valley
    • Monday-Friday between 4:00-7:00pm 
    • Saturdays 9:00am-1:00pm

Responsibilities

  • Instructs and demonstrates proper gymnastics techniques, progressions, and routines to ensure safe and effective skill development
  • Designs and implements age-appropriate and skill-specific training plans tailored to individual gymnasts or groups
  • Monitors and evaluates participants’ performance, offering constructive feedback to enhance their strength, flexibility, coordination, and technique
  • Provides guidance and support to first-time gymnasts, fostering a positive and encouraging learning environment while showing enthusiasm, leadership, fairness, and fun through coaching style
  • Ensures all participants engage in proper warm-up activities before training sessions and completes appropriate cool-down exercises afterward
  • Maintains quality and safety in all classes and a basic knowledge of equipment use and safety checks
  • Keeps equipment in good condition by returning equipment to storage area at end of class and notifying supervisor when equipment needs to be repaired
  • Communicates with parents regarding program evaluations and participant progress, and distribute certificates of achievement and program evaluations to class participants
  • Works with the Program Director to ensure all participants are registered and in the correct class, and maintain accurate records of class attendance
  • Attends training events and instructor clinics when made available, and immediately notifies supervisor regarding participants or parent incidents
  • Ability to adequately observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations and apply appropriate policies and procedures
  • Physical ability to safely spot, lead, demonstrate, and interact in group activities
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation
  • Ability to maintain a basic knowledge of equipment use and safety checks
  • Possesses a coaching style that demonstrates enthusiasm, leadership, fairness, and fun
  • Ability to model appropriate behavior and encourage positive social skills
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 16 years of age or older
  • If actively enrolled in high school, a valid school district Work Permit is required
  • 18 years of age or older, licensing, state law and our government funders require that staff within YMCA of San Diego County be fingerprinted, prior to reporting to work, and include subsequent arrest notifications
  • Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, supplemented by specialized training in gymnastics, or a related field
  • 1+ year's of experience working with children ages 3-14 in a classroom or fitness setting
  • Previous gymnastics coaching experience is a plus 
  • CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification, must include Adult and Child/Infant, obtained within 30 days of hire and must be from one of the following certifying organizations:
  • American Red Cross
  • American Heart Association
  • American Safety & Health Institute 

 

YMCA will consider qualified applicants with a criminal history pursuant to the San Diego County Fair Chance Ordinance and the California Fair Chance Act. Pay Range

USD $19.69 - USD $23.63 /Hr.
