Swim Instructor

The Swim Instructor is responsible for providing adequate instruction within National Program and YMCA of San Diego County Guidelines. Provide excellent customer service to members and participants.

Hiring Locations:

 

North County – Escondido YMCA - Campus For Community Well-Being (Escondido) - Must be available Mon-Fri from 2pm-6:30pm (Pool opening in June 2025. The position at Escondido will start on 05/02/25. Will be able to work at other locations in the meantime)

 

North County – Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA (Encinitas) - Must be available on weekdays from 2pm-6:30pm, Saturdays from 8:30am-12:30pm, and/or Sundays from 10am-2pm 

 

North County – Mottino Family YMCA (Oceanside) - Must be available Mon-Fri from 3pm-7pm and on Saturdays

 

North CountyRancho Family YMCA (Rancho Penasquitos) - Must be available Mon-Fri from 4pm-8pm and weekends 

 

Central – Mission Valley YMCA (Mission Valley) - Must be available Mon-Thu from 3pm-7:30pm and weekends from 8am-1pm

 

Central – Copley-Price Family YMCA (City Heights) - Must be available for a minimum of 1 day per week. Must be available Mon-Fri 4pm-8pm and/or Sat 9am-1pm 

 

Coastal – Ryan Family YMCA (Pt. Loma) - Must be available for afternoons and evenings on weekdays and weekend mornings 

 

Coastal – McKinney Family YMCA (La Jolla) - Must be available Monday-Friday from 9am-12:15pm *Must be available all five days for instructor consistency in camp lessons. 

 

East CountyMcGrath Family YMCA (Rancho San Diego/Spring Valley) - Must be available at least 1 weekend day, and available from 3pm-7pm M-Th 

 

South County – Border View Family YMCA (Otay Mesa West) - Must be available Mon/Wed from 4pm-8pm, Tue/Thu/Fri from 7am-10am, and Sat from 8am-12pm

 

South County – South Bay Family YMCA (Chula Vista) - Must be available Thu-Fri from 9am-11:30am or 2:30pm-8:15pm and 1 weekend day

Responsibilities

  • Instructor enforces safety rules and follows appropriate discipline guidelines
  • Instructor ensures that practice time is sufficient for all students to learn skills
  • Instructor follows logical skill progressions, and covers appropriate amount on information in time available
  • Instructor recognizes and corrects improper strokes or skills using positive feedback
  • Instructor communicates effectively with students in a patient, friendly manner
  • Administer First Aid and/or CPR as necessary
  • Report any hazards or problems to Director immediately
  • Educates participants regarding rules and regulations of pool area
  • Ability to work effectively with others in alignment with the YMCA 4 Core Values
  • Models the 4 Core Values in all aspects of position responsibilities
  • Visual and auditory ability to critical incidents, and the physical ability to act swiftly in emergency situations
  • Ability to adequately observe participant’s activities, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned needs to be included to all roles

Qualifications

  • Minimum 16 years of age
  • Current YMCA Swim Lesson (YSL) Certification or American Red Cross WSI Certification (must obtain YSL within 6 months)
  • Current CPR PRO/AED and must be from one of the following certifying organization: American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Safety & Health Institute.
  • Current First Aid certification and must be from one of the following certifying organization: American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Safety & Health Institute.
  • Current O2 certification and must be from one of the following certifying organization: American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Safety & Health Institute.
  • Experience instructing swim lessons preferred
  • Must pass written and practical skills exam prior to duty

 

YMCA will consider qualified applicants with a criminal history pursuant to the San Diego County Fair Chance Ordinance and the California Fair Chance Act. Pay Range

USD $19.69 - USD $21.66 /Hr.
