Overview

The Sports Instructor Lead is responsible for monitoring and supervising staff of youth and adult sports including practices, clinics, and games. The Lead ensures the safety of all participants in planning and implementing quality YMCA programming and will serve as a positive role model to all program participants.

Schedule

  • Weekdays 4:00pm - 10:30pm and possible weekends 8:00am - 4:00pm. Hours will vary dependent on programs. 

Responsibilities

  • Plan, lead, and supervise assigned youth and adult sport practices, clinics, and games. Prepares game schedules and confirm attendance 
  • Prepare sports fields and courts for use including equipment set up and breakdown 
  • Provide ongoing training, supervision, and support for all Sports Instructors and Sports Instructor Assistants 
  • Travel to other Y branches for sports programs, when needed 
  • Maintain a safe environment ensuring playing areas are suitable for game play 
  • Serve as a score keeper for assigned games 
  • Maintain a positive relationship with staff, participants, volunteer coaches, and parents 
  • Track attendance of participants in games, clinics, and practices, along with maintaining records 
  • Ensure effective communication with parents, colleagues, volunteers, and participants 
  • Ability to supervise and interact with staff and participants 
  • The physical ability to lead in group activities and to perform related physical skills 
  • Ability to adequately observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations and apply appropriate policies and procedures 
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required 
  • 2+ years’ experience working with youth and adult sports 
  • Sincere interest in and ability to work with groups of athletes, parents, and staff of diverse ethnic populations 
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation 
  • Ability to supervise and interact with staff and athletes 
  • Licensing, state law and our government funders require that staff within YMCA of San Diego County be fingerprinted, prior to reporting to work, and include subsequent arrest notifications 
  • CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification, must include Adult and Child/Infant, obtained within 30 days of hire and must be from one of the following certifying organizations: 
    • American Red Cross 
    • American Heart Association 
    • American Safety & Health Institute

Pay Range

USD $19.69 - USD $22.00 /Hr.
