Overview

The Caretaker provides ON-SITE evening, late night and weekend support to young adults including supervision of participant and visitor activities, application of program rules, crisis intervention, and responding to maintenance emergencies to ensure a safe and clean living environment for participants.

SCHEDULE

  • 5 hours per week 

WORK DESIGNATION:

  • In-Person at our City Heights residential location
    • Staff live on site and are provided a 1 bedroom unit at the program residence 
    • Please note that the work designation may change based on business needs. 

PROGRAM SUMMARY

 

The YMCA Turning Point program provides temporary housing and supportive services to young adults (ages 16-21), with and without children, that are experiencing homelessness. Our program is specifically designed to facilitate the transition to self-sufficiency by balancing “real world expectations” and a positive youth development philosophy.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure a clean, well-maintained, and safe facility; Ensure residents maintain a safe and adequate living environment in accordance with program standards  
  • Perform apartment cleanliness check on a bi-weekly basis and as required by supervisor; Perform night checks on a weekly basis
  • Provide crisis intervention, situational and group mediation to participants after hours as needed; Coordinate emergency evacuation procedures when necessary; Respond to emergency calls from residents when the office is closed; Complete necessary documentation of critical incidents in a timely manner  
  • Available for participant check in if desired by resident  
  • Ensure delivery of consistent levels of service, including coordination with all program staff; Communicate effectively with Supervisor, co-workers, participants, families, and other service providers; Communicate with program staff regarding any intervention issues with residents  
  • Coordinate resolution of maintenance emergencies after hours  
  • Daily oral and written communication with program staff regarding nightly and weekly happenings with all residents; Maintain agency records as required  
  • Participate in move-in procedures with new resident as needed  
  • Position may require the transport of participants in a YMCA vehicle to and from activities and appointments as needed; Practice non-aggressive defensive driving techniques; Operate YMCA vehicles in safe manner; Vehicle use is for YMCA business only  
  • Perform other administrative tasks as assigned and assist with maintaining proper document storage and auditing  
  • Participate in and attend all required staff meetings, trainings, YMCA staff development events and appropriate agency-wide committees  
  • Ability to work effectively with others in alignment with the YMCA 4 Core Values; Models the 4 Core Values in all aspects of position responsibilities 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in social science, psychology or a related field or equivalent work experience is preferred  
  • Ability to live in a YMCA apartment or shared dwelling for the duration of employment as a Caretaker, private bedroom and bathroom provided, rent and utilities paid for by YFS  
  • Experience working with young adults (ages 16-24) in a residential program required 
  • Familiar with the operations of a transitional living program preferred  
  • Experience with Independent Living Skills issues preferred  
  • Experience providing customer service within a hospitality setting highly preferred  
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills

  • Must possess the ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills  
  • Must be available to the program during evening and late-night hours, including weekends and holidays 

PRE-HIRE CONTINGENCIES

  • Licensing, state law and our funders require that applicants be fingerprinted, prior to reporting to work, and include subsequent arrest notifications  
  • CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification, must include Adult and Child/Infant, within 30 days of hire, and must be from one of the following certifying organizations: American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety and Health Institute  
  • Position will require additional clearances in order to comply with all program, licensing, state law, and funding requirements:  
    • Physical exam obtained prior to first day  
    • Negative TB test results obtained within the past one year, prior to first day, and annually thereafter, as required  
    • Pass pre-employment drug testing prior to first day  
    • Must be 21 years of age or older with a valid CA Driver’s License, a good driving record and a current CDL H6 print-out (must be dated within 30 days of application) and pass vehicle proficiency exam

Pay Range

USD $20.19 - USD $20.41 /Hr.
