Overview

The Adaptive Program Coordinator is responsible for implementing adaptive strategies into program activities and operations, creating an inclusive environment where individuals with disabilities can build confidence, develop skills, and experience community. This role provides guidance on adaptive best practices, procedures and guidelines, and participant behaviors to staff. By working closely with participants and families as well as staff and leadership, the Coordinator helps modify program operations, structures, spaces, and materials to meet the specialized needs of individuals and groups. This position is a compassionate, positive role model and contributes collaboratively to the YMCA’s mission and goals.

 

The Adaptive Coordinator will initially support Adaptive programming within the Aquatics department and report to the Aquatics Director. This position will assist with the administration and delivery of Adaptive swim lessons, including participant and family communication, intake interviews, and accurate record keeping. The Coordinator will support daily program operations through direct, in-ratio instruction, staff communication and training, and by ensuring program spaces, processes, and materials are accessible and responsive to the unique needs of Adaptive participants. During camp seasons, the Coordinator will also support Adaptive Camp programming and provide assistance in other program areas as needed.

Schedule

  • Location: Ryan Family YMCA 
  • Schedule to be TBD based on program needs
  • The position will primarily work mid-day to evening hours, with some weekend availability required
  • Aquatics hours will remain relatively consistent, with additional hours available during other program seasons, including Camp, Sports, and other program offerings

Responsibilities

  • Implements adaptive strategies and approach into branch’s program operations to maintain a safe and inclusive environment for adaptive participants, ensuring all activities comply with established adaptive procedures and guidelines
  • Provides direct supervision, mentorship, and support to Adaptive Leaders; guides and advises adaptive and program staff on best practices, adaptive procedures and guidelines, fostering a collaborative team approach to participant care and program delivery
  • Conducts intake procedures with Adaptive families to assess individual needs, determine best program placement and supports, and facilitate connection to appropriate program areas of interest
  • Implements behavior support strategies for individual participants, groups, and staff to promote positive engagement
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with participants, parents, staff and community
  • Facilitates development and implementation of Adaptive procedures and guidelines within assigned program(s)
  • Coordinates clear, professional, and timely communication with all stakeholders regarding program updates, participant progress, and operational needs
  • Provides assistance to Adaptive program operations and direct support to Adaptive participants as needed
  • Maintains documentation of provided services, incidents, and behavior logs in accordance with program standards
  • Enthusiasm for working with diverse individuals in an inclusive environment
  • Visual and auditory ability and physical capacity to quickly identify, assess, and respond effectively to critical incidents and emergencies
  • Proficiency in applying behavior modification strategies and coaching participants and staff on effective behavioral support techniques
  • Proficient verbal communication skills, warm and approachable when interacting with children, parents/guardians, and staff
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, multitask effectively, and exercise independent judgment and initiative
  • Sound understanding of program initiatives, structures, and operations
  • High level of dependability, accountability, and professional consistency in execution of responsibilities
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED required
  • 3+ years' of experience working in youth programs or in a related field, which must include 2+ years' of experience working with individuals with developmental, social-emotional, or behavioral needs, and 1+ year's of supervisory experience over staff
  • Licensing, state law, and our government funders are required that all staff (hybrid, remote, or onsite) within YMCA San Diego County are fingerprinted prior to reporting to work, and include subsequent arrest notifications.
  • CPR and First Aid certification is required within 30 days of hire and must be from one of the following certifying organizations:
    • American Red Cross
    • American Heart Association
    • American Safety & Health Institute

Pay Range

USD $22.64 - USD $27.17 /Hr.
